However, they do frequently suffer from other types of dental disease. Periodontal or gum disease, is the number one illness found in both dogs and cats. Dental disease can also lead to systemic health problems in dogs and cats. While the damage caused by periodontal disease is sometimes irreversible, it can be halted with antibiotics and regular cleaning. Prevention is the BEST answer.
